Improving rivers
Most of the rivers of England are in need of improvement to restore their chemical, biological or physical quality. Many organisations contribute to river improvements in the UK in various ways. A major government agency doing so is the Environment Agency for England and Wales. But NGOs such as the Association of Rivers Trusts (ART) are playing an increasing role in improving rivers around the country. A rivers trust is a not for prpfit organisation dedicated to improving a river to benefit people and nature. WWF has through its Natural Rivers Programme supported the development of ART and assisted new trusts to become established. See details of WWF's work with the Association of Rivers Trusts.
